You have the choice and the power to heal and transform your life.
Whether you are a long-time knitter or a complete beginner, I believe that knitting can become an integral part of your “wellness toolkit.” By cultivating a regular knitting practice you can manage stress, and enhance your health, happiness and holistic well-being.
Hi. My name is Becky Stewart
I’m on a serious mission to stamp out stress and get word out about the therapeutic benefits of knitting.
Knit Om started as a memento; a record of my own personal journey to become the very best version of myself that I can be – emotionally, physically, and spiritually. It began as an inquiry into wellness and conscious living; and what it means to truly thrive in life.
As a stay-at-home mama of three young children, I often experience feelings of stress, overwhelm, and burnout. I am regularly sleep-deprived (and therefore irritable), and I wish that I had infinitely more patience – not just with my kids, and my partner, but with myself.
In the past, I have experienced at least two major depressive episodes and the last time was a doozy. (Perhaps I’ll tell you about it another time.) Suffice it to say that it was not good. Recovery was hard and it took a long time.
I never want to experience that again.
Over the years, I have learned to prevent relapse into mental un-wellness, by taking personal responsibility for my own health and making a life-long commitment to self-care. (It is not always easy).
I have come to realize the importance of balance, of slowing down, and living more sustainably – in terms of my own energy consumption.
But, perhaps more importantly, I have learned how to recognize “warning signs” – patterns of behaviour or habits that clue me in to what is going on. I have learned to tune in, listen to my body, and be mindful of early indicators of stress and potential un-wellness.
The very moment I detect a hint of stress, anxiety, overwhelm, or depression, I take ACTION.
There is a whack-load of things that I do to nip that stress in the bud, but one of the most simple, effective, and indispensable tools that I have in my “wellness toolkit” is my knitting.
And it has NEVER let me down.
Knitting as Soul-Nourishing Meditation
For many years, I have experienced first-hand the powerful healing benefits of knitting and I continue to use it to manage daily stresses and maintain my mental health.
However, I feel that there is so much more to be discovered.
Knit Om represents the next chapter of my journey. Not only is it an exploration into wellness and personal growth, it is an inquiry into mindfulness meditation and contemplative knitting – that blissful place where knitting and meditation become one and the same.
Anecdotal evidence strongly suggests that knitting can induce a flow state similar to mindfulness.
Like Yoga, knitting uses physical movements to induce a state of mindfulness, and affect a change in your state of mind. The rhythm of working the same stitch over and over again calms the heart rate and breathing, creating a feeling of stability and inner quiet.
Recent research has shown that mindfulness can be very effective in treating depression and chronic pain:
Mindfulness can be a difficult technique to teach, particularly to those who need it the most – the highly stressed, those suffering chronic pain or depression. These conditions make it difficult to concentrate the mind. Knitting is exciting because it opens up the benefits of Mindfulness to everyone. – Betsan Corkhill
I would love for you to join me on this journey. There is no better time to start than right now.
Take some time for yourself today. Sit down and simply knit.
You will be happy that you did.
Peace, Love and Knit Om…
