Therapeutic Knitting – Wellness- Conscious Living

Whether you are a long-time knitter or a complete beginner, I believe knitting can become an integral part of your “wellness toolkit.”

By cultivating a regular knitting practice you can manage stress, and enhance your health, happiness and holistic well-being.

Hi. My name is Becky

I’m a stay at home mother of three, and I’m on a serious mission to stamp out stress and get word out about the therapeutic benefits of knitting and meditation.

Let me explain…

I was always an active kid. I was a competitive gymnast, I played squash competitively, and enjoyed netball and athletics at school. When I wasn’t in organized sports, I was out climbing trees and building forts.

For two years at college, I trained to become a beach and pool lifeguard. Training included lots of ocean swimming, and kayaking. I went on climbing and caving trips.

I loved it all! Until…

At the beginning of my second year, at the age of 18, I fell ill with Shingles, and shortly after that, I was diagnosed with ME/CFS. Since then, I’ve also suffered from bouts of major depression and anxiety.

One day, I’ll tell you the full story, but for now, let’s just say that recovery has been hard, and the journey to wellness has been rocky.

It takes time, patience and consistent effort.

But it is possible.

Over the years, I have learned to prevent relapse into “un-wellness” by taking personal responsibility for my own health and making a life-long commitment to self-care.

(It is not always easy and relapses happen).

I have come to realize the importance of balance, of slowing down, and living more sustainably – in terms of my own energy consumption.

But, perhaps more importantly, I have learned how to recognize “warning signs” – patterns of behaviour or habits that clue me in to what is going on.

I have learned to tune in, listen to my body, and be mindful of early indicators of stress and potential un-wellness.

The very moment I detect a hint of stress, anxiety, overwhelm, or depression, I take ACTION.

There are a whack-load of things that I do take control of my well-being, but one of the most simple, effective, and indispensable tools that I have in my “wellness toolkit” is my knitting.

Yes. Knitting.

And it has NEVER let me down.

“Properly practiced, knitting soothes the troubled spirit, and it doesn’t hurt the troubled spirit either.”

– Elizabeth Zimmermann

Knitting as Soul-Nourishing Meditation

Knit Om is an exploration of ideas and stories about therapeutic knitting and conscious living

We also look into mindfulness meditation and contemplative knitting – that blissful place where knitting and meditation become one and the same.

Anecdotal evidence strongly suggests that knitting can induce a flow state similar to mindfulness. Like Yoga, knitting uses physical movements to induce a state of mindfulness, and affect a change in your state of mind.

“Mindfulness can be a difficult technique to teach, particularly to those who need it the most – the highly stressed, those suffering chronic pain or depression. These conditions make it difficult to concentrate the mind. Knitting is exciting because it opens up the benefits of Mindfulness to everyone.”

– Betsan Corkhill

The rhythm of working the same stitch over and over again calms the heart rate and breathing, creating a feeling of stability and inner quiet.

Healing is in your hands.

I would love for you to join me on this journey. There is no better time to start than right now.

Take some time for yourself today.

Sit down and simply knit.

You will be happy that you did.

Peace, Love and Knit Om…
